Greenhouse Energy Conservation

As you well know, operating a greenhouse in northern Wisconsin through the winter months is an expensive endeavor.  Cold temperatures and low light levels are big obstacles to keeping a greenhouse running profitably all year long, but there are some great innovations that greenhouse owners can take advantage of to save a lot of money during the long, cold months of winter.

If you’re interested in saving energy and money while operating a year-round greenhouse, plan on attending a Greenhouse Energy Conservation Workshop on Wednesday, December 14th at the Price County UW-Extension Office in Phillips.  The program will run from 9:30 am to 3 pm.  We’ll cover a number of topics including efficient plant production methods, basic energy conservation practices for greenhouses, thermal curtains, and bioenergy heating systems.  Our guest speaker will be Scott Sanford from the Rural Energy Program at the UW-Madison Department of Biological Systems Engineering.  While the focus for this program will be on greenhouses, some of the information may also be helpful for hoophouse owners.

Registration fees are $15 per person, and cover program materials, refreshments, and lunch.  There is a minimum attendance requirement for this program, so I would ask you to register as early as possible.  The final registration deadline is Monday, December 12th.  To register, please contact the Price County UW-Extension Office at 715-339-2555, email me at mark.kopecky@ces.uwex.edu,  or visit us on the web at http://price.uwex.edu/ .
